How to Spot Online Scams in Kenya: Red Flags Every Beginner Should Know
Online scams cost Kenyans money every year, and they target people who are looking for work or extra income. Knowing the patterns helps you stop before you lose anything.
Red flag 1: You must pay to get a job
Legitimate employers do not charge you for an interview, training kit or “activation”. If someone asks for a fee before work starts, walk away.
Red flag 2: Guaranteed high returns
Any scheme promising fast, guaranteed profits is almost certainly a scam. Real investments carry risk and are not guaranteed.
Red flag 3: Pyramid and referral-only schemes
If your income depends mainly on recruiting others rather than selling a real product or service, it is likely a pyramid scheme.
Red flag 4: Urgency and pressure
“Limited slots”, “pay in the next hour” and similar lines are designed to stop you thinking. Take your time.
Red flag 5: Fake proof
Screenshots of large payouts, luxury cars or bank balances are easy to fake. Do not treat them as evidence.
Red flag 6: Overpayment and cheque tricks
A “client” sends more than the agreed amount and asks you to refund the difference. The original payment later fails. You lose your own money.
Red flag 7: Requests for private data
Never share your ID, bank logins, M-Pesa PIN or one-time codes. No genuine employer or platform needs your PIN.
Red flag 8: Moving the chat off the platform
Scammers push you to WhatsApp or Telegram so the platform cannot protect you. Keep communication and payment on the platform when possible.
How to check an opportunity
- Search the company name with the word “scam” or “reviews”
- Check that the website and contact details are real and consistent
- Verify registration where possible
- Ask a trusted friend before paying
If you have been scammed
Stop all contact, keep records and screenshots, report the account to the platform, contact your mobile money provider or bank right away, and report to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations or your nearest police station. You can also report fraudulent numbers to your network provider.
